Why does my toenail die every 6 months?

I injured my big toe a couple years ago, as a result my nail died and a new nail began to grow underneath. Around 6 months later, the replacement nail also died and a new nail again began to grow. This has been a cycle ever since, and although I am not experiencing major discomfort it is strange.
