Concerned about post care of a phenol treated ingrown toenail

I recently had my ingrown grow back, and this time they removed it with “phenol”, only a small section of the nails been removed. All my doctor told me to do was keep the “gutter” open (that the phenol made) so that it could drain and soak in epson salts twice a day, bandage with an antibiotic , ect. I’m not entirely sure what “keeping the gutter open” means, I was told to pry back the skin a little when I soak it, but should I do more
